Farewell to a Legend: NBA Star Rajon Rondo Retires After 16 Seasons

He is considered one of the most intelligent point guards to ever step onto the NBA floor. Rajon Rondo (38) has announced his retirement after 16 seasons in the American Basketball League. He became a two-time NBA champion and a four-time All-Star.

In the podcast “All The Smoke” by the two former NBA players Matt Barnes (44) and Stephen Jackson (45), Rondo answered the question whether the NBA had seen the last of him: “Yes, it’s over. I can not anymore. I would rather spend time with my children.”

The former point guard played eight and a half years for the Boston Celtics, with whom he won a title in 2008. After leaving Boston, he became an itinerant player and played for eight other teams. This included the LA Lakers, with whom he won his second NBA title in 2020. He played his last game in the 2021/22 season for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Rondo expressed gratitude about his NBA career on the “All The Smoke” podcast: “What a time, it was definitely something I never took for granted when I was playing. […] I learned a lot from this game and it made me the man I am today.”

NBA superstar LeBron James (39) praised his former teammate highly: “One of the best players I have ever played with. […] When I was in LA and he came to the Lakers, I was over the moon about it. I knew what we could achieve together. Rondo always talked about how if he teamed up with me we could win a championship. We did that.”

Rondo led the NBA in steals in one season and in assists in three seasons. He was also selected to the All-Defensive team four times. With 7,584 assists, Rondo is currently the 15th best passer in the NBA.
