Fueled by Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, Warriors Overcome Spurs in Second Half Surge

Manhandled in the first period, Stephen Curry and the Warriors woke up after the break to push back the Spurs from a very good Victor Wembanyama. Golden State is giving itself some breathing space against the Rockets.

For the home stats of this match, it’s here.

Golden State still likes to scare itself, even against a much weakened opponent. It’s hard not to say the opposite when seeing the list of injuries on the Spurs side heading into this match. No Devin Vassell, no Jeremy Sochan or even Keldon Johnson. Suffice it to say that Victor Wembanyama seemed well insulated to carry his own.

The Spurs collective, however, made a good impression throughout the first half. The ball is turning well, Wemby is not having a great night in scoring but that is not visible thanks to the contribution of the role players. Defensively San Antonio even manages to provide the minimum service. It is therefore logical that the spurs arrive at the station wagon in the lead.

Upon returning from the locker room, Golden State FINALLY revolts. Draymond Green is in all the good moves. We find the pitbull involved offensively and general of defense for the Dubs. His duo with Stephen Curry (33 points including 21 in the second half) puts his team back in the lead in a quarter largely dominated by the Warriors.

Opposite, Victor Wembanyama is increasing his intensity. Excellent defensively in the first period but unable to exert enough weight in attack, the Frenchman finally managed to punish. Like against the Knicks a few days ago, Wemby delivers high-level money time on both sides of the pitch. He notably scored 18 of his 32 points in the last act alone.

The outbreak of Victor Wembanyama puts the Warriors in doubt. While heading to a quiet victory, the Dubs see the Spurs coming back strong. Two shots from Wemby cut Golden’s lead to just +2 with a minute remaining.

The Warriors will nevertheless use their experience in hot moments to win. Draymond Green, definitely valuable, goes for a crucial offensive rebound and serves Klay Thompson who sends a dagger after a very complicated evening shooting for him.

While Wemby had again brought his team to 3 lengths, this devil Green will once again prove decisive by recovering a (generous) mistake from Victor on the rebound. The pit bull only makes one of his throws but that is enough to make his team happy. With the Rockets’ defeat against Dallas, Golden State is breathing easier for the Play-In Tournament.
