the essentials The tennis champion announced the end of her career, this Saturday, April 20, at only 31 years old. She will have mixed memories of the Parisian Grand Slam.

The clay court of Roland-Garros will remain, for her, one of her fondest memories. But also one of the most painful. Garbine Muguruza, Spanish tennis champion, announced her retirement this Saturday, April 20, after 12 years of professional career.

Ex-world number 1, she has two Grand Slam singles titles to her name: Wimbledon 2017, and Roland-Garros 2016. The coronation won at Porte d’Auteuil was, thus, the first major trophy of her career.

But the following year, in 2017, the Parisian adventure was cut short. And it ended badly. Muguruza was eliminated in the round of 16, defeated by Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic (6-1, 3-6, 6-3). A meeting during which the public strongly supported the Habs, achieving the feat of removing the title holder.

Shortly after the defeat, Muguruza, as usual, found herself facing journalists. At a press conference, when asked about the public’s support for her opponent, she burst into tears.

First leaving the press room, overwhelmed by emotion, she then returned to explain herself. “I think the crowd was a little hard on me today, although I understand. But sometimes they should have been a little more respectful, even for the game. We had to stop all the time, the referee had to calm them down all the time.”

Before concluding on a positive note: “But I’m not here to make enemies, I love playing here.”
