Handball Champions League: SC Magdeburg is aiming for a solid cushion at Industia Kielce

As of: April 23, 2024 4:35 p.m

We know each other from last year’s Champions League final, and the cards will be reshuffled on Wednesday. This time SC Magdeburg wants to create a solid cushion for the second leg in the quarter-finals at Industria Kielce with the German national goalkeeper Andreas Wolff.

Defending champion SC Magdeburg faces a difficult task on the way to the hoped-for treble in the Champions League. In the quarter-final first leg, the DHB Cup winner and Bundesliga leader will have to face German national goalkeeper Andreas Wolff against Polish series champions Industria Kielce on Wednesday (April 24th) from 6:45 p.m. It is the new edition of the 2023 final, which the SCM won 30:29 after overtime. Rumors are bubbling about Kielce goalkeeper Wolff

Industria Kielce’s squad has hardly changed since the Champions League final against SC Magdeburg. Head coach Talant Dujshebaev was able to keep his stars such as captain Alex Dujshebaev, Arkadiusz Moryto, Artsem Karalek and goalkeeper Andreas Wolff.

Speaking of Wolff, the rumor mill is churning. According to unconfirmed reports, the 33-year-old world-class goalkeeper, who has been earning his money in Kielce since 2019, has already agreed with the Magdeburg team about a change at the end of the season. SCM coach Bennet Wiegert neither wanted to confirm nor deny this before the first leg on Wednesday in Poland. “It’s great that SC Magdeburg is associated with such great players,” he commented on the speculation.

SCM coach Wiegert: “We have so much ahead of us, so many games”

However, the thought process that Wolff could sign with the Green-Reds does not seem to be completely unrealistic. Since Magdeburg’s goalkeeper Nikola Portner is currently suspended due to a positive doping test, he is threatened with a ban of several years. If this were to happen, the SCM would have an acute need for action in the goalkeeper position.

Wolff, for his part, has never ruled out a return to Germany despite a contract in Kielce that runs until 2028. Wiegert is therefore not surprised “that this is now being fueled with the Nikola Portner case.” He himself pushes the topic aside. “We have so much ahead of us, so many games,” warned the 42-year-old.
