“I can’t believe I’ll still be able to play with my kids”: cyclist Jay Vine gives emotional update after horror crash

Jay Vine has responded for the first time after his heavy crash in the Tour of the Basque Country. The Australian from UAE Team Emirates is especially happy that he still has a future.

Vine was one of the heaviest victims of the massive crash during the fourth stage, including Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard. The 28-year-old Australian broke a cervical vertebra and two vertebrae.

“When I saw the live footage and he wasn’t moving, I didn’t know if I still had a husband,” said his wife Bre Vine. “I was afraid of the worst news. There is no doubt that this was a horror crash. Cycling can be very hard and this is further proof of that.”

Vine, winner of the Tour Down Under last year, first had to stay in the hospital in Spain for observation for a few days. He will also have to wear a neck brace for six weeks. In the meantime, he made himself heard via Instagram.

“What incredible support from everyone. Thank you very much for all the messages,” said Vine, who also had a serious crash in the Vuelta. “Medical update from my side: I’m walking as well as you can expect. I was able to walk around my room with the help of a walker and taking the first step was quite emotional after what I went through. I am now waiting to go home to Andorra, but the people at the hospital have been A+ for the care I have received.”

“I just can’t believe that one day I will still be able to walk and play with my kids,” Vine sums up the seriousness of the facts together. “It was quite scary for quite a few days when we weren’t sure if surgery would be required or neurological problems would arise. A long way to go for my recovery, but I’m looking forward to getting the process started.”
