Why was Stefon Diggs’s contract with the Texans changed from four years to one?

He promptly received a raise for the year 2024, along with the removal of 2025, 2026, and 2027.
The Texans did not cut ties with a significant amount of money and cap space when they terminated the remainder of the contract. Diggs was set to receive million in 2025, million in 2026, and .495 million in 2027. The Texans benefitted Diggs by freeing him from his contract before the second-round draft pick they traded to Buffalo in 2025 could be used.

After it was announced that the Bills were making a trade to send Stefon Diggs to the Texans, a common concern was if Diggs would seek a modification to his contract and when he would do so.

The Texans are taking a chance by potentially losing Diggs as a free agent in 2025 if he has a successful year and another team offers him a large contract. They are also gambling that such a scenario will not occur, based on his past experiences of being traded by two teams and the fact that he will be 31 years old this season.

This is a fantastic result for Diggs, whose pay for this year has now risen from .5 million to over million, including the bonus of it being his first contract year.
Why take the risk? The reasoning is quite clear. They desire an exceptional rendition of Diggs. They have no interest in tolerating any minor issues that the Bills overlooked until they culminated into a major one. If the Texans face a challenging schedule at the start of the season and struggle to win, or if Diggs does not receive the desired number of passes, the prospect of free agency may tempt him to reject any challenges that the Bills had to overcome.
