Kobe Bryant’s 2000 Lakers Championship Ring Sells for Record-Breaking Price at Auction

Eleven years ago, Kobe Bryant’s father, Joe Bryant, auctioned off a 2000 Los Angeles Lakers NBA championship ring that his son had given him. Now the ring has been sold by the same auction house for more than five times as much: $927,200.

Four years after Kobe Bryant’s tragic death, his 2000 championship ring was auctioned off. The highest bid was $760,000, with the remainder coming from the buyer’s premium charged by the Goldin auction house.

The identities of the buyer and seller were not disclosed by the auction house. So it is unknown whether Bryant’s wife Vanessa Bryant bought the ring to give back to the family.

The nearly $1 million price tag is a record for an NBA championship ring. The highest price so far was $705,000 for Hall of Fame center Bill Russell’s ring from 1957, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Around four years ago, Lakers legend Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash.

His daughter Gianna Bryant, among others, was in the helicopter with him. She didn’t survive the accident either.

“Black Mamba” played exclusively for the Los Angeles franchise in his NBA career. In these 20 years he won five NBA championships, was named MVP and, among other things, four times scoring champion.

Over his career, Kobe averaged 25 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals. There is now a statue of the icon in front of the Lakers hall. His shirt numbers 8 and 24 are also no longer available.
