Latvia Triumphs in Women’s Ice Hockey World Championship with 3-2 Victory Over Great Britain

Elizabeth Saunders put Great Britain in the lead in the third minute.

Emīlija Jakovljeva tied the score in the 18th minute after assists from Ligas Miljones and Krista Jipčakas.

In the 34th minute, Miljone’s skating alone against the visiting goalkeeper was stopped by the British team with an illegal technique, and Miljone was awarded a penalty shot. Noticing the goalkeeper to the right, he sent the puck with an easy shot over the goalkeeper into the upper left corner – 2:1.

Great Britain needed just 48 seconds to equalise. In the quick attack, after a shot by Ketrina Marsden, the puck in the goal of Christiana Apsite came off the leg of Jakovleva – 2:2.

Most of the winning goals were scored by Latvia in the 44th minute, when Linda Rulle scored after Agnes Apsita and Anna Kubliņa’s pass, approaching the goal from the position of the right defender – 3:2.

Kristiana Apsite managed 49 shots in the winning goal, while Nicole Jackson saved 28 shots in the visitors’ goal.

After five rounds, Slovakia won 12 points and took first place, Latvia was second with ten points, Italy collected nine, Great Britain seven, Slovenia five and Poland two.

On Sunday, in the first match of the championships, Latvian hockey players lost to Slovakia with a score of 1:7, on Monday they beat Italy with a score of 3:2, on Wednesday they lost to Slovenia in the shootout series with a score of 3:4, and on Friday they defeated Poland with a score of 6:0.

Great Britain beat Italy and Slovenia 1-0 and 2-1 respectively, but lost 2-3 on penalties to Poland and lost 1-7 to Slovakia.

In preparation for this tournament, Latvian ice hockey players played a test match against Poland on Friday and won 3:0.

A year ago, the Latvian national team won in Mexico City in Group A of the second division of the World Championship and advanced to Group B of the first division.

The world championship in the B group of the first division, which is the third in the ranking of world championships for women, was held in the “Volvo” hall from March 31 to April 6.

The first-placed team, Slovakia, will play in the A group of the first division next season, while Poland, which came last, will play in the A group of the second division in 2025.

Coaches Ahto Karna, Paulis Zvirgzdiņš and Vladislavs Koniševs help Hanna Saintulas in his work with the Latvian national team.
