Top performers in Lucerne

Last summer, goalkeeper Marius Müller moved from FC Luzern in Switzerland to FC Schalke 04 for 350,000 euros. Before moving to the 2nd Bundesliga, the 30-year-old asked his then teammate and ex-S04 professional Max Meyer for information about the club and its surroundings. Now the goalkeeper is trying to catch up with the midfielder who is twelve months late.
“As a friend, I am of course trying to get him excited about us. Although he originally got me excited about Schalke. I would be happy to sit next to him in the dressing room. That’s why I’ll maybe call once or twice more often than I already do,” Müller told Bild when asked about Meyer’s contract situation. The 28-year-old’s working paper in Lucerne ends in the summer; the separation was announced last week after the right-footer did not accept the offer of an extension.
Former Schalke player Meyer back in form at FC Luzern: returning in the summer?
From 2009 to 2018, Meyer wore the Schalke jersey, where he made the leap into the professional ranks and became a national player. Shortly before the 2014 World Cup, he made his debut in the DFB team in a 0-0 draw against Poland, and made three further appearances in 2016. However, since his departure to Crystal Palace in 2018, which took place with some unpleasant background noise, the performance curve of the sixth youngest professional in the Schalke club’s history has shown a downward trend. This was followed by stints at 1. FC Köln, Fenerbahce and FC Midtjylland before he came to Lucerne in 2022.

In the Super League, Meyer managed to turn things around; in 69 games, the attacking midfielder scored 19 goals and provided two assists. His market value rose again at the end of 2022 for the first time in four years; he is currently valued at 2 million euros, making him the third most valuable player in the Lucerne squad. At Schalke he would be in second place – if Assan Ouédraogo were to be sold, he would actually be the most valuable player along with Ron Schallenberg (25) according to the current status.
Nothing is yet known about specific discussions between the player and the club. At least Meyer’s openness seems to be there. According to Müller’s statements, Schalke’s willingness is the decisive factor. “These are things that neither he nor I can decide. I would be grateful because in my opinion he is a very good player who can make the difference,” said the goalkeeper.
