Roland-Garros: Federer, Djokovic… After Nadal, it’s over!

On May 20, Roland-Garros will open its doors. Despite his recent physical problems, Rafael Nadal will try to win the French Grand Slam a fifteenth time. Asked about the Majorcan, Emilio Sanchez affirmed that no one will ever succeed in beating his record of titles on Parisian clay.

Rafael Nadal is the king of Roland-Garros. In fact, the Mallorcan has already won the Grand Slam French on 14 occasions. Little spared by his body in recent months, Rafael Nadal will do his best to participate in this edition of the Parisian tournament, which will begin on May 20. While he will soon retire from sports, the 37-year-old veteran will attempt to lift a fifteenth silver bowl at the Porte d’Auteuil. If he achieves such a feat, Rafael Nadal can rest easy, no one will ever beat his title record at Roland-Garros.

“A guy who wins 14 Roland Garros, that will no longer exist”

“A guy who wins 14 Roland Garros will no longer exist. Roland‐Garros is the most difficult tournament to win. Federer won one and Djokovic won three, knowing that these two guys come from another planet! A tennis court can sometimes help you, but the only one that doesn’t help you is Roland Garros, on clay. In 2008, when Rafa beat Federer in these two consecutive finals (at Roland‐Garros and Wimbledon, editor’s note), Federer made 25 aces at Wimbledon, or 25 points without playing,” estimated Emilio Sanchez, before adding a layer.

“It’s the hardest tournament to win”

“Do you know how many he made in the final in Paris? Just one, with the same service. But here, the court slows you down, which allows the other player to return the ball. To these 25 aces, add the winning serves, the volleys and the services that put you in a comfortable position: that can be 100 points without playing. At Roland Garros? Only one,” concluded Emilio Sanchez during an interview with Punto de Break. His comments are reported by We Love Tennis.

Nadal will be present at the Laver Cup

Waiting to argue Roland-Garros, Rafael Nadal formalized its presence at the Making Cup (September 20-22): “I am very happy to play the Laver Cup in Berlin for the European team. I have very fond memories of my Laver Cup experiences, including all the emotions I experienced in London two years ago playing alongside Roger for the last time. At this point in my career, I really want to get on the court and make the most of every opportunity I get. Teaming up is always an amazing experience and I’ve always enjoyed it, the competition is different and exciting. I can’t wait to go to Berlin and help the European team regain the Laver Cup.”
