Nadia Comaneci: A Pioneer in Gymnastics and Gender Equality

The best gymnast in history spoke in advance of the Laureus award gala. And she assured: “I only did what she had to do.”

Nadia Comaneci established herself as the best gymnast in the world at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, when she obtained a perfect 10 in her uneven bars routine. Within the framework of the celebrations for the Laureus Awards she spoke about gender equality during her time as an athlete.

“48 years ago I had never heard of gender equality and I just went and did what I had to do. Now I’m happy because I achieved what no one, no man, would have achieved (the 10th). “Sports gave me a voice when I was only 14 years old and I feel proud because that girl opened the door to other women.”expressed Nadia about her milestone in artistic gymnastics.

He also referred to having participated in the Olympic Games and described them as every child’s dream. And he added: “When I was an athlete, boys did not have as many opportunities to play sports, much less girls.”

He also remembered how he communicated with his fans after his perfect participation in Montreal 1976. Since he said that he received around 250 letters per day, which he was able to answer little by little. “Those were my social networks”he compared.
