For the first time in the history of the Italian Serie A, a trio of female referees took charge of a football match. At the home game between champions Inter Milan and FC Torino on Sunday, referee Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi and her assistants Francesca Di Monte and Tiziana Trasciatti were in action. “It was fantastic to see an all-female refereeing trio take charge of a Serie A match for the first time,” said Gianni Infantino, president of world football governing body FIFA.
However, there was criticism online due to the sending off of Turin professional Adrien Tameze at the beginning of the second half. Insults against the referee could also be heard from the visiting fans in the stands. The 33-year-old Caputi became the first woman to be appointed as a referee in Serie A in 2022. So far this season she has led seven games in the top Italian league.

The Inter team arrived in Milan’s Cathedral Square around 11 p.m. at the end of a seven-hour tour aboard two buses. Around 40 people had to receive medical care because of the crowd. There were no clashes, police said.
