The NBA has prohibited Jontay Porter from participating in games after an investigation into his gambling revealed that he disclosed confidential information and placed bets on matches.

During both matches, Porter failed to meet the prop-wager bet lines for points, rebounds, and 3-pointers, as offered by certain sportsbooks. For instance, one set of prop wagers for the Clippers game had Porter’s line at 5.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists; however, he ended the game with zero points, three rebounds, and one assist. In the Kings game, the lines were set around 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds, but Porter finished with zero points and two rebounds.

The league began an investigation after being informed by licensed sports betting operators and a monitoring organization about unusual betting activity regarding Porter’s performance in a game against Sacramento on March 20. It was discovered that Porter divulged information about his health to a bettor before the game and that a known NBA bettor placed an ,000 bet through an online sports book that Porter would not meet the predetermined targets in parlays. This bet was worth .1 million if successful.

According to Silver, safeguarding the fairness of NBA games is of utmost importance for the satisfaction of our fans, teams, and all individuals involved in our sport. This is the reason why Jontay Porter’s clear disregard for our gaming regulations will result in significant consequences.

The organization has multiple affiliations and connections with over twenty gaming corporations, most of which promote themselves during NBA broadcasts in various manners. Silver has long supported legalized sports betting, but strict guidelines are in place for players and staff members when it comes to gambling.

Porter is the second person to be banned by Commissioner Adam Silver for violating league rules. The other was now-former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling in 2014, shortly after Silver took office.

The investigation conducted by the league is ongoing and could uncover additional information, which will be disclosed to federal prosecutors.

According to the NBA, the bets made by Porter did not pertain to any game that he participated in. However, three of the bets were combination wagers spanning multiple games, one of which was a bet on the Raptors losing even though Porter was not playing. These three bets were ultimately unsuccessful.

Jontay Porter, a two-way player for the Toronto Raptors, was permanently barred from the NBA on Wednesday as a result of an investigation that determined he had revealed private information to individuals involved in sports betting and had placed bets on games, including betting against the Raptors.
The league also determined that Porter — the brother of Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr. — placed at least 13 bets on NBA games using someone else’s betting account. The bets ranged from to ,000; the total wagered was ,094 and generated a payout of ,059, or net winnings of ,965.

Porter’s actions were in violation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, which states that any player who places a bet on a game or event in the NBA or G League will be given a chance to respond to the charges and the Commissioner’s decision will be final and cannot be appealed.

According to ESPN, a report was made about an investigation regarding Porter’s performance in two games on Jan. 26 and March 20. In both instances, he played for a short amount of time before exiting due to injury or illness. Against the Los Angeles Clippers, he played for 4 minutes and 24 seconds, and against Sacramento, he played for 2 minutes and 43 seconds.

Porter left the game within three minutes, citing being unwell. His performance did not match the predetermined totals set in the parlay. The league froze the ,000 bet and did not award it. The NBA then launched an inquiry shortly after.

Last week, Silver warned that this action was a possibility, referring to Porter’s alleged actions as a major violation in the NBA. Porter has not made any statements since the investigation began and was not included in the Raptors lineup for the rest of the season due to personal reasons.

Porter, who is 24 years old, had an average of 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 26 games, with five of those being starts. Additionally, he participated in 11 games for Memphis during the 2020-21 season.

“According to Silver, the legalization of sports betting can promote transparency and aid in detecting any questionable or unusual behavior. However, it also brings up concerns about whether the current regulatory system is adequate, especially in regards to the specific types of bets allowed for our games and players. Our league will collaborate with all parties involved in the industry to ensure that we take necessary precautions to protect our league and its games.”

Some members of the Chicago Bulls are expressing frustration over the presence of sports betting in the NBA, citing concerns that it undermines the integrity of the sport.

Silver described Porter’s actions as “blatant” when making the announcement.
