Speed and Aggressiveness: The Cincinnati Reds’ Young Core Shines in Base Running

It’s safe to say that the Cincinnati Reds have one of the most formidable young cores in all of Major League Baseball today, led by; of course, by the Dominican Elly De La Cruz, only 22 years old.

Now, such is the explosiveness exhibited by the group, that they lead the MLB this year in stolen bases with 34, being one of only two teams with 30 or more stolen bases in this first month of the season (the other is the Washington Nationals with 33).

Although they only have Elly De La Cruz within the top-5 (7 BRs), they present a total of eight players – including the Dominican – with multiple sacks so far this campaign; more than any other team in the League. This of course highlights the aggressiveness and the various offensive weapons that the team has to do damage.

And that, without counting the final baserunning (UBR); which offers a broader look at the speed aspect and highlights the ability to add runs through effective trail movement.

They give importance to base running

It should be noted that, in 2023, the Reds were the fourth best team in the National League with a UBR of 5.2, which with such a display of speed is likely to improve, but there is still a lack of data so that FanGraphs can quantify this year’s UBR.

Likewise, it should also be noted that up to six Reds players have an extra base taken rate (XBT%) of at least 50%; which is nothing more than a metric that Baseball-Reference uses to measure the percentage of times that the runner takes the extra base on each of his hits that initially end in singles.

This can give us a context, although simpler, of how fundamental base running is in the game of the Cincinnati Reds. Although, this information does not shed light on the approximate number of races they can manufacture.

Currently, the Reds are fourth in the middle of the National League, with a 9-9 record and two and a half games out of first place.
