Mercato: PSG dropped a fortune on an “extraterrestrial”

PSG made the history of the transfer window in 2017 with the recruitment of Neymar for €222 million, the most expensive player in history. And even if the entire passage of the Brazilian striker can be considered a failure, his former Parisian teammate Abdou Diallo prefers to put things into perspective and emphasize Neymar’s immense qualities.
Traumatized at the time by the comeback of Barcelona and the season without a title in Ligue 1, the management of PSG had decided to hit very hard during the market summer 2017. Neymar arrived with fanfare at the Parc des Princes, becoming the most expensive player in history (€222 million), and was followed a few weeks later by Kylian Mbappé (€180M). But it turns out that the Brazilian striker, too often undermined by long-term injuries, did not have the expected story with PSG and was finally sold to Saudi Arabia last summer.
“The demands upon his arrival were too great”
On the airwaves of RMC Sport, Abdou Diallo nevertheless insisted on ensuring the defense of Neymar whom he worked with for five years at PSG : “I’m not too tongue-in-cheek, so what I think is that the demands on his arrival are enormous, it’s perhaps even too great for a single player. It seems like he’s going to do everything on his own. Then, what we can almost blame him for are certain of his absences in the sense that at key moments of a season, he was absent for several years. Of course he doesn’t control everything since there are also injuries. However, in terms of statistics, contributions to the game, personality, spectacle, emotions transmitted, we cannot speak of failure,” assures the Senegalese defender, who plays for Qatar since last summer.

Abdou Diallo continues about Neymar : “It was an EXTRATERRESTRIAL. He played on the left, in the center, at one point he found himself alone up front. In addition, Thomas Tuchel liked experiments. We had a tactic on Navas’ clearances, we played in support. The little bridges, the highlights, it was a recital! Behind it, what was good was that there were ten guys who put themselves at the service of this individuality. He was a bit like the icing on the cake, but the cake was so substantial, so on a mission and ready to sacrifice that the mayonnaise set straight away.” Despite the fortune spent by the PSG for its transfer, Neymar does not really amount to a failure according to the former Parisian defender.
