No athlete likes to win after an opponent’s misfortune. Something like this has happened to Mattias Skjelmose, new leader of the Tour of the Basque Country after the abandonment of Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic due to a heavy fall during the fourth stage. The Dane was third overall, but the accident between the Belgian and the Slovenian has caused him to be the leader now.

Skjelmose has attended his corresponding awards ceremony. However, the Dane did not want to take on the yellow jersey that distinguishes him as the leader of the race. He greeted the public with the jersey in his hand. A gesture of solidarity with his colleagues, who have had to say goodbye to the race in the worst way.

Among those involved in the fall was also Jonas Vingegaard, who had to be evacuated to the Txagorritxu hospital by an ambulance. In the accident nine other riders fell to the ground.
