The perception of insecurity in Mexico rises to 61% in the first quarter of 2024 – El Sol de México

Mexicans’ perception of insecurity rose to 61 percent in the first quarter of 2024, a period marked by the violence of the electoral campaign, in which crime is the greatest concern of voters.

This means that more than 6 out of every 10 inhabitants over 18 years of age considered it unsafe to live in their city, according to the National Urban Public Safety Survey (ENSU) revealed this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

The result from January to March compares with the 59.1 percent from October to December 2023, when it reached its lowest level since records began, the autonomous institute noted in its report.

The perception of insecurity is growing amid political violence, with 15 candidates murdered so far in the process leading up to the June 2 elections, according to official figures reported by the Government on Tuesday.

Media polls agree that security is voters’ priority, with about half citing it as their top concern.

The Inegi statistics exhibited a persistent gender gap, with 66.5 percent of women reporting insecurity compared to 54.5 percent of men.

A year earlier, 68.1 percent of them perceived insecurity compared to 54.8 percent of them.

The increase in the perception of insecurity occurs despite a 4.43 percent year-on-year drop in intentional homicides in the first quarter of 2024 to 7,155, an average of 79 per day, as revealed on Tuesday by the Ministry of Security and Protection Citizen (SSPC).

In Fresnillo, 95.4 percent of its inhabitants reported this feeling in the midst of the massacres committed there by organized crime.

They are followed by Naucalpan (89.6 percent), Zacatecas (89.3 percent), Chilpancingo (87.3 percent), Cuernavaca (87 percent) and Ciudad Obregón (86.6 percent).

In contrast, the Benito Juárez mayor’s office in Mexico City was the place with the lowest perception of insecurity, with only 11.1 percent of the population.

They were followed by Piedras Negras (19 percent), Cuajimalpa (22.5 percent), Mérida (23.2 percent), Tampico (23.6 percent), and Los Cabos (24.8 percent).

For public space and for crime

Regarding specific spaces, 69.4 percent of the population felt unsafe in ATMs, 63.9 percent in public transportation, 53.9 percent on roads and 53.5 percent in banks. .

33.9 percent of the population considered that, in the next 12 months, the crime and insecurity situation “will remain just as bad” and another 21.5 percent said that “it will get worse.”

In contrast, 19.2 percent thought that the situation “will continue just as well” and 23.5 percent expect it to improve.

Citizens who reported having witnessed crimes near their home were related to alcohol consumption in the streets (59.2 percent), robberies or assaults (49 percent), vandalism (40.6 percent), sale or consumption of drugs (38.6 percent), shooting weapons (37 percent) and violent gangs or gang members (25 percent).
