The trick of Guillermo Peinado, the great Spanish climber: “I focus on climbing well and enjoying, not on the results”

Guillermo Peinado (Madrid, 2005) has a ‘split’ head in two: studies and climbing. Balance, like when standing on a wall, is critical to proper development as an individual. He and those close to him know this, so he keeps his feet on the ground despite his meteoric rise promotion last season after their results in different competitions in which he participated – both nationally and internationally.

He lives in Colmenar Viejo, at the foot of the Madrid mountains, and from there he dreams that one day he will take his cat’s feet, his backpack, and go along the M-607 in the direction of the airport to catch a flight towards the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Many things have to happen to do that, but every training day it is inevitable to think about it, as reflected in a conversation with him.

How has your life changed in the last two years?

On a sporting level, it has changed a lot for me. I’ve gone from climbing some afternoons, training with the FMM tech team and competing in local and national championships to being part of Team Putnik and having some incredible resources that help me improve as a day-to-day athlete. In addition to competing and traveling with the Spanish National Team halfway around the world most weekends of the year.

Do you leave Spain a lot to train?

When I can I escape to train in France or Austria, soon I will go to Japan for three weeks.

How do you finance the expenses involved in these trainings?

Apart from the global support that Equiposputnik gives me, I have a contract with them that allows me to finance these trips, in addition to other contributions from my main sponsors – Scarpa and Trangoworld – and financial aid from the Community of Madrid and the ‘Council of Colmenar Viejo.

Guillermo Peinado is a promising athlete at international level / .

Looking back at your results since your international debut, almost all of them have been successful, does it add pressure or fear to always finish so well in every event you take part in?

I wish my results were good in all competitions. I am very young and every competition is a world and represents a new opportunity to learn and improve, there is no pressure at all on the result. For me, the performance and how I scale and manage each section of each competition has much more value. I don’t focus on the results, I focus on climbing well, enjoying and meeting the improvement goals set for each competition. When that happens, I’m satisfied with myself and it’s already a gold medal for me.

Sometimes I can have a good sports result and bad management in these areas; in these cases I am not satisfied.

At what point did you realize that climbing was really good for you, even at world level? The moment you knew you could do great things…

When I started at age 11, I discovered that I loved climbing and that I quickly gained level and increased difficulty. Then I became part of the Madrid Federation’s Technification Program, which allowed me to start training at another level and compete in local and national competitions, and I realized that although I had a lot of room for improvement , was starting to have good results. This especially motivated me to continue enjoying and training to continue improving.

Can you tell me about your challenges for the near future and the more distant future?

In the short term my challenge is to advance to the semis and finals of the world cup, and in the medium term to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

On a personal level, how do you combine climbing and traveling with your studies?

It is not at all easy for me, it requires an extraordinary sacrifice and sometimes it is very stressful and frustrating, but thanks to the flexibility and collaboration offered by the educational center where I am studying, I can gradually combine it.

What would you like to do professionally in the future? Something related to climbing or a race…?

I would like to continue competing for as long as possible until I can dedicate myself to rock climbing projects.

I would also like to pursue university studies after I finish my computer science degree where I am now.

Outside of training, where and when do you enjoy climbing the most?

I enjoy a lot both in competitions and in nature, outdoors rock climbing.

And outside of climbing, what else do you like to do?

I really like photography and video, riding a bike and doing enduro and motorcycle trials.
