VfB Stuttgart: On Track for Champions League with New Records

60 points, a new away record and a new goal record: things are still going well for VfB Stuttgart. However, coach Sebastian Hoeneß is still exercising restraint, as is sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth.

Equal points with FC Bayern Munich – after 28 Bundesliga matchdays? Anyone who predicted this scenario before the season can pat themselves on the back. In fact, after the 1-0 win in Dortmund, VfB Stuttgart is on a par with the record champions with an impressive 60 points and is gradually eyeing the Champions League ticket as a solid third place in the table.

VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß, who celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Westfalenstadion after the victory achieved thanks to Nico Schlotterbeck’s blatant miss Sky When asked about the upcoming premier class ticket, however, he was immediately reserved. “I don’t believe that,” said the coach about the theory that with so many points you can virtually no longer fall out of the top 4.

However, Hoeneß recognized the threesome as a “brutally important step – very, very clearly. We have 60 points.” But: “They won’t be enough this year. I think they often have (in the past; Anm. d. Red.) was enough, but this year we will need significantly more points. That’s why we’re well advised to quickly concentrate on Eintracht Frankfurt.”

Hoeneß: “That makes me proud”

A look at the current Bundesliga table reveals: Hoeneß is not wrong. There are only seven points between the second Bayern Munich (60), the third Stuttgart (60), Leipzig (53) in fourth place and BVB, which has currently slipped into the Europa League realm (also 53), with six match days to go. In other words: A club will have to bite the bullet in the Europa League.

By the way, Hoeneß was also happy – about the passionate performance in front of over 80,000 spectators in the Signal Iduna Park, where many Stuttgart fans also came: “Today in this constellation (defensive puzzle after a few failures with surprise central defender Angelo Stiller; Anm. d. Red.) like that makes me proud… how the boys took their hearts into their hands and played a really good game here.”

By the way, a new club record was set with the fifth Bundesliga away win in a row – coupled with the fact that match winner Serhou Guirassy already has 24 goals this season after 22 league games. This is a VfB record set by Mario Gomez, who also scored 24 times in the 2008/09 season – but here in 32 games.

That impressed me a lot.

VfB sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth

All circumstances that also made Stuttgart’s sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth happy: “Those were of course big points today – and one of the most hard-fought games of the season. Especially with the challenges that large parts of the defense were down and that we had to rebuild. That bothered me “Very impressed, we were tactically disciplined from the start.” His final conclusion: “We opened the scoring after an outstanding combination. And we have to particularly mention how the fans carried us and pushed us through the game. And we increased the gap to BVB. But we have to focus on ours Concentrate on tasks.”
