The Vietnamese rowers literally made history, also becoming the first representatives of that discipline to get tickets to the world’s biggest summer sports festival.
Thi Huong, 23 years old and who previously practiced wrestling, got her ticket to Paris by finishing second in the women’s C1 200 m individual sculls final, with a time of 49.351 seconds in the qualifying competition held in Japan.
Thus, almost five years after joining the national team, the young rower and five-time champion of the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) achieved an achievement that many athletes take years to enjoy.
Pham Thi Hue, on the other hand, is a veteran of Vietnamese rowing. Born in 1990, before becoming a future Olympian she won six gold and two silver medals at the SEA Games.
Thi Hueen’s classification in the individual rowing heavyweight category was also seen by specialists as exceptional, since Vietnam is usually strong only in light boats.
The hopes of this Indochinese nation of completing the ten qualifiers are now placed on badminton player Le Duc Phat, who seems to have his ticket to Paris in his pocket, but must wait until April 28 to confirm it, as that will be when the World Sports Federation announces the list of competitors.
In the middle of this month, badminton granted Vietnam its seventh Olympic passport, then through its number one racket in the women’s classification, Nguyen Thuy Linh, who will attend an event under the five rings for the second time.
So far, the other Vietnamese athletes qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games are Nguyen Thi That (cycling), Nguyen Huy Hoang (swimming), Trinh Van Vinh (weightlifting), Vo Thi Kim Anh (boxing) and Trinh Thu Vinh. Le Thi Mong Tuyen (shooting).
According to what the director of the Sports Department of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sports, Dang Ha Viet, told the press, the goal set for the 2024 Olympics is to reach between 12 and 15 places, a number that he admitted will not be easy to achieve.
