1.6 million people remain unemployed – El Sol de México

In April, the unemployment rate in Mexico reached a level of 2.6 percent after two consecutive months of reduction, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported this Thursday.

According to the National Occupation and Employment Survey (ENOE), the institute stated that in April at least 1.6 million Mexicans were unemployed, of which 940 thousand were men and 662 thousand were women.

According to Inegi, Mexicans between 25 and 44 years old represented 43.9 percent of unemployed people in Mexico, which represents 0.6 percentage points less compared to the previous year.

Regarding the job search, the Inegi shows that 47.7 percent of unemployed people searched for work for more than a month, while 30 percent of people without work remained in this condition from one month to three months.

On the other hand, the Economically Active Population (EAP) was 61.5 million people, of which 59.8 million were employed in April.

The services sector employed 26.6 million people, commerce another 11.5 million; while the manufacturing industry employed 9.5 million people, agricultural activities employed 6.4 million, and 9.5 million worked in construction.

Labor informality was located at 54.6 percent of the EAP, that is, 32.6 million Mexicans.
