12 track and field athletes will represent Latvia at the European Championship, several female students will compete in North America / Article

Latvia will usually have the widest representation in the continental championships in javelin throwing, where Līna Mūze-Sirmā, Anete Sietiņa, Gatis Čakšs, Patriks Gailums and Rolands Štrobinders will compete. Latvia’s strongest long-distance runner Agate Caune will compete in the 5,000-meter distance, while Valters Kreišs will claim a high result in the pole vault.

Dmitrijs Milkevičs on the qualification of track and field athletes for the Paris Olympic Games

If Mūze-Sirmā already guaranteed participation in the Paris Olympic Games last year, and Sietiņa is also very close to it, then in the men’s javelin, only Čakš is in a better position in the fight for an Olympic ticket, while Gailum and Strobinder must strive for higher results in order not to risk being left behind.

The fight for the opportunity to start in Paris is also continued by the runner Gunta Vaičule, who is scheduled to start in Rome in the distances of 200 meters and 400 meters. On the other hand, Artūrs Niklāvs Medveds will run 10,000 meters, Oskars Grava will start in the 200-meter sprint, Sandis Dzenītis – in the triple jump, while Raivo Saulkēris will walk 20 kilometers.

Simultaneously with the European Championship, the US Student Sports (NCAA) Championship will be held in Eugene from June 5 to 8. At the NCAA Championship, Lasmane and Darja Sopova will compete in the triple jump, while in the heptathlon, conference champions Kristine Blaževiča and Elīza Kraule will be among the participants.

Track and field athletes still have a month to achieve results that guarantee participation in the Paris Olympics, or climb high enough in the world rankings to get one of the remaining tickets.

The European Championship will take place in Rome from June 7 to 12. All competitions can be seen live on LTV7 and LSM.lv.
