A dream comes true for Germany’s sprint star and influencer Alica Schmidt. In the Bahamas she managed to qualify for the Summer Olympics in the mixed relay. The 25-year-old reacts emotionally.

She did it. Track and field star Alica Schmidt will take part in the Summer Olympics in Paris (July 26th to August 11th). The 25-year-old qualified in the mixed relay over 4×400 meters at the World Relays in the Bahamas.

At the unofficial World Relay Championships, which also served as qualification for the games, the German quartet of Schmidt, Manuel Sanders, Emil Agyekum and Johanna Martin sprinted to first place in 3:13.85 minutes.

Schmidt said after the race: “We could all rely on each other. I have never experienced a person approaching a run so calmly because they were sure that it was going to be very good.”

Schmidt then shared a snapshot of herself and her season colleagues in her Instagram story and wrote: “What a night. From paradise to Paris.” Despite securing qualification for Paris, there was also a small downer for the runner. Schmidt could have even celebrated a double participation with the women’s 400 meter relay, but nothing came of it.

The quartet with Schmidt, Skadi Schier, Mona Mayer and Hannah Mergenthaler only made it to the fourth relay. It would have needed at least second place.

But: In addition to the mixed relay, the German relay teams were also able to qualify for the Olympic Games in the women’s 4×100 meters and men’s 4×400 meters.

“I’m incredibly excited”

Schmidt was allowed to travel to the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, but was not used in the women’s 4×400 meter relay or in the mixed 4×400 meter relay. Now it looks like she will soon be sprinting onto Olympic soil.

Schmidt recently said on RTL: “Tokyo was really something completely different because there was simply no one in the stadium other than us athletes. That was an exceptional situation.” And further: “I’m incredibly excited to see what’s to come in Paris.”
