Alexander Zverev was in top form at the dress rehearsal for the French Open. The German won the Tennis Masters in Rome. In the final he impressively defeated the Chilean Nicolas Jarry 6:4 and 7:5.

Zverev, fourth in the world rankings, started the match strongly. 90 percent of his first serves reached their target, and he made almost no simple mistakes. Nevertheless, Zverev only managed the first break when the score was 5:4 – which also gave him the first set.

Zverev uses the fourth match point

Zverev initially showed no weakness in the second set either and played his serves confidently. At the same time, he missed two break chances when the score was 2:1.

The second round was also very close until the score was 4:5. Then Jarry, number 24 in the world, wobbled and made a double fault. Zverev suddenly had two match points, which the Chilean fended off confidently and then took the game to 5:5.

“Rome a special place”

But Zverev stuck with it, served strongly again and put the Chilean in trouble again on Jarry’s serve, so he got the third match point, but he couldn’t use it either. But then the fourth came – 7:5 for the German.

“The victory means a lot to me. Rome is a very special place for me,” said the 27-year-old Zverev, who had already won in Rome in 2017. Sunday’s title was his first at the Masters 1000 level since his serious foot injury two years ago.

The clay court season had previously been a bit bumpy for Zverev: round of 16 in Monte Carlo, quarter-finals in Munich, round of 16 in Madrid. For his 22nd tournament victory, Zverev received 963,225 euros in prize money.
