Arne Slot reveals that his own son’s deep wish came true on Sunday during the match between Feyenoord and PEC Zwolle. Joep Slot was among the hard core during the match, for the first time in the three years that his father has been coach of the Rotterdam club.
The match against PEC, which gave Feyenoord a resounding 5-0 victory, was largely dominated by Slot’s upcoming farewell. The trainer, who is well on his way to the English top club Liverpool, will be on the bench for the last time on May 19 when Excelsior visits. However, due to the disturbances surrounding the semi-final of the KNVB Cup against FC Groningen, four fanatical sections will remain empty that day by order of the KNVB.

That is why Slot even walked over to the relevant sections afterwards to thank the audience there. “You’ve never seen me do that before. I don’t think I would have done it on my own today, but I couldn’t avoid it this time when Justin (Bijlow, ed.) and Lutsharel (Geertruida, ed.) said: ‘Trainer, they won’t be there in two weeks, so you can’t avoid walking there now.’ Not that I did it reluctantly, because the appreciation I feel from them is just as great the other way around.”
In addition, there was also a very personal touch for the trainer. “The fun part was, and this story will probably make it into the newspaper…”, Slot begins, grinning. “My son had one wish in the three years that he was here. And that was that he could be among the hard core. I just saw videos of him singing along loudly, so maybe he was the one who every time. But: his dream came true.”
