Austrian judo squad heads to World Championships in Abu Dhabi with high hopes

On Friday morning, the first ÖJV delegation (including head coach Yvonne Snir-Bönisch and super lightweight Katharina Tanzer/-48) flies off to the World Championships in Abu Dhabi (UAE, May 19th – 24th). On Sunday, the first day of the competition – with Tanzer), number 2 seed Michaela Polleres (-70), Magdalena Krssakova, Lubyana Piovesana (both -63) and Wachid Borchashvili (-81) will follow. The draw for the 14 weight classes (7 women and 7 men each) and the mixed team competition is scheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m. (CET, local time: 2:00 p.m.).

Good soil: The red-white-red athletes have consistently good memories of Abu Dhabi, or rather the Mubadala Arena in the metropolis with a population of 1.5 million. Last October, at the Grand Slam tournament, Lubyana Piovesana, Wachid Borchashvili and Aaron Fara each won bronze. Michaela Polleres won her first Grand Slam medals (bronze each) in the United Arab Emirates in 2018 and 2019.

Number 2: At the World Cup – with 676 judoka from 109 nations – Michaela Polleres is once again in the spotlight. The 26-year-old from Lower Austria, Olympic silver medalist and two-time World Cup bronze medalist, is number two in the seeding list. Only the Greek Elisavet Teltsidou, two-time Grand Slam winner and runner-up European champion, is ahead of her. In the personal head-to-head it’s 1-0 for the Greek (victory at GS Baku 2022).

Hope mixed team place for Paris 2024: “The starting position is clear: We want – as in recent years – to at least win a World Cup medal and to appear in the top 7 with as many active players as possible,” says ÖJV sports director Markus Moser. Background: In the Olympic rankings, only four players are currently directly qualified for Paris: Michaela Polleres (-70), Lubjana Piovesana (-63), Shamil and Wachid Borchashvilli (both -81/only one starting place per nation), and only three have one fixed starting point. There is also Aaron Fara (-100), who occupies the first of 12 European quota places and can therefore also plan for the Olympics. “In order to get a fixed place with the mixed team, we would need a fifth fixed qualification. That would be our dream – then we would be among the top 16 judo nations,” says Markus Moser, hoping for a red-white-red judo sensation.

ÖJV squad: A total of twelve Austrians are working in Abu Dhabi. Katharina Tanzer (-48 kg) starts on Sunday. The World Cup squad in detail, women (6), Sunday (May 19th, preliminary round: from 9 a.m., CET, final block: 4:00 p.m., CET), – 48 kg: Katharina Tanzer (SU Noricum Leibnitz/ST); Monday (May 20, 8:30 a.m./4 p.m.), -57: Laura Kallinger (Judoring/W); Tuesday (May 21, 10/16), -63: Magdalena Krssakova (JC Sirvan/W), Lubyana Piovesana (LZ Hohenems/V); Wednesday (May 22nd, 09/16), -70: Michaela Polleres (JC Sparkasse Wimpassing/NÖ/2); Thursday (May 23rd, 10/16), +78: Maria Höllwart (ESV Sanjindo Bischofshofen/S);
