Battle for the Title: FC Bayern Footballers Take on VfL Wolfsburg in DFB Cup Final

The men remain without a title this season. The FC Bayern footballers can collect their second trophy this summer on Thursday (4 p.m./ZDF and Sky). The DFB Cup final is against VfL Wolfsburg – and lots of records!

One thing remains regardless of the result: for the first time since the final was played in Cologne (2010), there are no longer any tickets to buy on the day of the final. The stadium is packed with 44,400 spectators.

FC Bayern wants to prevent other records. Because Wolfsburg could win the cup for the tenth time in a row and for the eleventh time overall. The Lower Saxony team have not lost in this competition for 49 games (!). If there is the 50th win in a row, record winner VfL captain Alexandra Popp (33) would hold the cup in her hands for the 13th time.

There’s fire in it. Because it is the Wolfsburg women who want to prevent their first titleless season in women’s football since 2012. “Winning the cup right now is extremely important for us. After an inconsistent season by our standards, we want to show that we are still there,” says Popp in SPORT BILD. “Everyone says that that’s it with Wolfsburg. Yes, we weakened. Yes, departures hurt. But we still have a lot left in the tank.”

In doing so, she also contradicts the fact that Bayern have finally replaced Wolfsburg as number 1 in German women’s football with their second championship title in a row. “This is totally exaggerated! There was a phase in which Bayern became champions twice, but still couldn’t overtake us in the long term,” says Popp. “Bayern is doing a good job right now. But you also have to remember that since 2013 we have mostly been in the top four in Europe and have won 17 national titles. Anyone who doesn’t acknowledge this is disrespectful to us. Others have to imitate that first.”

At least nationally, Bayern want to do better than in previous years. “As FC Bayern we always want to win as many titles as possible. It’s nice that we now have the chance to win the DFB Cup again. The Bayern women last managed that in 2012. It’s time again,” says defender Giulia Gwinn (23). The fact that she and Munich won twice in the league against Wolfsburg gave them even more courage for the final. “We can take a lot of confidence from this,” Gwinn said.

In any case, it is the duel between the two best German teams – and Bayern’s last chance for the title of the season.
