Lübeck – First construction, then cuts and now the end!
Massive granite bollards line the horizon of the fine villa street. Almost 400 steles were installed by the city on Jürgen-Wullenwever-Straße against the wishes of the residents. Flowers were even laid down in protest because the granite ensemble was reminiscent of a military cemetery. But now the turning point: a large part of the bollards are to be removed again.
Poller Posse goes into the third round
The redesign of one of Lübeck’s most beautiful streets began in May of last year. It should be a bicycle zone. A two million dollar flagship project in the heart of the city. A colorful plan was presented to the residents.

But when the construction work began, the big shock: 75 centimeter long steles were concreted into the ground at the closest possible distance to protect the 129 trees in the Lindenallee from cars. That had nothing to do with the original presentation.

The surprised residents protested against the bollard madness – with a small success. The city of Lübeck gave in and the steles were subsequently shortened by 25 centimeters. But the cemetery feel remained.

Now the building committee dealt with the park bollards. At the request of the CDU, it was decided to partially clear the stele forest. Dr. Ulrich Brock (52) from the CDU parliamentary group: “Due to the high curbs, it is hardly possible to drive on the green area, which is why the steles there are unnecessary. After all, the residents are not maliciously behaving in a traffic-contrary manner, says the chairman of the building committee.”

40 to 50 percent of the steles will have to be cut back to ground level. The boundaries on the driveways will remain in place because it would be possible to drive on the green areas there.
“The measure will eliminate the catastrophic aesthetic impression on site; we hope that the administration will implement our decision as quickly as possible,” emphasizes Brock.
Residents happy
The residents are satisfied with the decision: “Hopefully the impression of a war cemetery will soon be over. And we will privately plant the remaining granite bollards in the driveways with beautiful flowers and bushes,” says Jakob Schweyda (67).

And how much does dismantling cost? Dr. Ulrich Brock thinks the costs are manageable: “The first cutting of the steles cost 16,000 euros, then the current costs will be similar.”
