Courage, Courtesy, and Competition: Highlights from the A2 Beginners B National Championship Judo Tournament in Olbia

Olbia. The first day of competitions of the A2 Beginners B National Championship Judo comes to life, once we cross the entrance to the Geopalace we are welcomed by a space decorated with i Tatami yellow and red, the competition area extends for 400 metres, and there is certainly no envy of the warm-up area which extends for around 350 metres. The first bronze medal arrives and among many colors of belts, team shirts, badges displayed with pride, accents and cadences that reveal presences without borders from north to south of the Bel Paeseparents and teachers who encourage their children and athletes, we observe the faces of the young athletes who contain contrasting emotions, from the tatami one arrives smiling and one lets a tear escape, the pats on the back can be a balm or perhaps a little technique lesson to make it clear that a “uki goshi” or a “sode tsurikomi goshi” or a “Morote Seoi Nage” can make the difference and take you to the mat, from which you emerge after a respectful bow to your opponent. The billboard that dominates the side of the warm-up area where the hundreds of athletes competed reads: “Judo is courtesy, courage, friendship, self-control, sincerity, modesty, honor, respect.”

Words that have a great meaning and demonstrate team spirit, but also the hospitality behind this organization, Maestro Efisio Mele runs between the stage and the backstage area and tells us “we are very satisfied, very happy, there was a good organization, there are really a lot of us, certainly both today and tomorrow we will finish in the evening, there are a lot of people.” Our Cicerone, assistant in the refreshment area, as well as Campione, who works behind the scenes today explains to us how this Championship was born: “We remember that in recent years our company has organized and hosted not only the World Veterans Championship but also the World Juniors, and some of these Champions are now playing in the Olympics.” With pride and enthusiasm Federico Deiana continues: “We asked to host the events, having organized other championships Our company has entered the ranking and therefore we had the title to organize and host the National Championship.” This is therefore the result of a work done previously in which the entire society, athletes, teachers, champions and all the families today remain behind the scenes just in case: from offering water, to replacing a microphone and accompanying athletes, race directors, judges and medical assistants where necessary. Leaving the immense hall dominated by so many flags, it is natural to greet with a bow and think that once again. Sport has done the magic of helping kids believe in the beauty of comparison and sharing, yes to competition but with respect.
