Decision made: Amenyido will not receive new contract at FC St. Pauli, Albers hopeful for extension

There were no farewell flowers at FC St. Pauli for the season finale. Not even for two professionals whose contracts are expiring: Etienne Amenyido and Andreas Albers. But at least one decision has been made, according to information from kicker: Amenyido will not receive a new contract.

The 26-year-old attacker had already been denied a place in the squad for the season finale in Wehen Wiesbaden (2:1), instead loanee Scott Banks was included for the first time since his cruciate ligament tear, was even substituted on and assisted the goal that won the championship. In the case of the Scot, who is on loan from Crystal Palace, sporting director Andreas Bornemann has made it clear that he would like to loan him from the island for another year after his recovery, but there are no statements regarding Amenyido’s future.

The attacker came from Osnabrück three years ago for just under 500,000 euros, had repeated injury problems, showed signs of potential, especially in his first year, but only made 51 appearances in three seasons at Millerntor. He scored six goals in those, but in the season that saw him promoted he did not have enough arguments for a contract extension. He did not play a significant role in the second half of the season after his recovery, even though coach Fabian Hürzeler had repeatedly stated: “If Eti gets fit, he can be a real weapon for us with his skills.”

Albers can still hope to stay

The case of Albers is somewhat different to that of Amenyido. The now 34-year-old Dane had to wait until the last matchday for his first St. Pauli goal, but those in charge have not yet given him the thumbs down. The reason: The centre-forward, who joined from Jahn Regensburg on a free transfer last summer, is extremely important as a squad player, enjoys a high reputation among his colleagues and the coaching team, and has already accepted his role as a substitute last season.

In addition, he can give the team more in the role of joker as a striker than Maurides or Amenyido, for example. And can therefore hope to spend another year in the Bundesliga at St. Pauli.
