Emotional Farewells and Special Gestures: The Heartwarming Moments of Patrick Herrmann’s Last Bundesliga Game

Things got emotional for Patrick Herrmann (M.) even before the final whistle, and there were also some special gestures after the game ended on May 11, 2024.

Special situations require special measures!

When the media representatives are in the mixed zone after the Bundesliga games, the following actually applies: If a professional or someone in charge is talking, they won’t be interrupted.

Gladbach icon Herrmann is also warmed by his opponents – an emotional moment

However, following Borussia Mönchengladbach’s 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt on matchday 33, a lot of things that are normal in everyday Bundesliga life were thrown out the window.

After the game, Tony Jantschke (34) suddenly stood in the middle of the north curve, Patrick Herrmann (33) stood on the lawn with a giant flag from the fan curve. The farewells of the two Borussia icons at their last home game in particular threw the process into disarray.

But they were beautiful and emotional scenes, of course for the two protagonists – and the around 50,000 fans in Borussia Park who carry the diamond in their hearts. But it wasn’t just them who got emotional.

When Herrmann was answering questions in the mixed zone almost an hour after the final whistle, the interview situation was repeatedly interrupted. It’s quite common for opposing players to walk past while they’re talking – but not for them to interrupt a Gladbach professional.

In these moments it must have once again become clear to Herrmann how popular he has become over the past 14.5 years of Bundesliga football.

Frankfurt keeper Kevin Trapp (33) stopped to give Herrmann another hug. Makoto Hasebe (40) also didn’t miss the opportunity to get back into the interview a week before his last Bundesliga game.

Hasebe wished Herrmann all the best for the future, both of them will be leaving the Bundesliga stage after the current season. For Hasebe there will be a farewell home on the Pentecost weekend.

Herrmann only reacted to the emotional moment with a smug “It’s happening to him too” – in reference to Hasebe’s impending farewell in Frankfurt next weekend.

However, a world champion ensured an extra long interruption: Mario Götze (31) was once on the pitch with Herrmann in his two senior international matches for the DFB. Götze grabbed his former teammate from behind and gave him a warm hug. After many encounters between the two on the pitch, Götze Herrmann could not have spoken more emotionally.

The third Frankfurt player then managed to ensure that Herrmann no longer knew what he had been talking about before the encounter. After a “Soo, now I have to think for a moment,” he then went on to discuss his decision to end his career.

Götze and his teammates then boarded the bus and returned to the Main. For Herrmann, what was probably the most emotional day of his long career came to an end – both of them had a point in their luggage after the draw.
