Farewell to Klopp, Thiago, and Matip: Legends bid goodbye to FC Liverpool

It’s not just Jürgen Klopp (56) who says bye bye FC Liverpool!

In the farewell ceremony for the successful German coach, two stars who also played their last game for Liverpool against Wolverhampton (2-0) were also bid farewell. Ex-Bundesliga stars Thiago Alcantara (33) and Joel Matip (32) said goodbye to loud applause.

Both, now ex-Liverpoolers, were honored by the club bosses and thanks were exchanged. Loud fan chants accompanied the two on their final journey to Anfield Road.

On Friday, ex-Bayern star Thiago (came from Munich for 22 million in 2020) officially announced his departure from Liverpool. He wrote on social media: “I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this city, this club and this community. (…) The past four years have been a time of learning for me and my family. Some wins, some losses, but without a doubt a life changing experience.”

Where he will go is still unclear. There is speculation about a return to Spain. “Relevo” reports that Spain’s surprise team FC Girona is said to be interested.

It was a difficult last season for Thiago; he only made one appearance due to injury. Klopp recently: “I know injuries have been frustrating for him and also for us, but the level at which he was able to play when he was available was incredible. I’ll remember that.”

Former Schalke player Matip is also leaving the “Reds” and his contract has not been extended. Matip tore his cruciate ligament in December last year and has not been on the pitch since. His future is also still unclear at the moment.

Matip played in Liverpool for eight years and was one of Jürgen Klopp’s first new signings. The Bochum native moved to the island from Schalke 04 on a free transfer in 2016 and has since played 201 competitive games for the Reds.
