At first glance, FC Bayern’s first title-less season in twelve years has left only a small mark on the squad’s value. Despite 14 downgrades in the Bundesliga’s latest market value update, the Munich team is only 2.8 percent worse off than at the start of the season. A loss of 58.5 million euros means a new squad value of 872.5 million euros – the lowest in almost two years. In international comparison, the record champions have slipped from 5th to 7th place behind Liverpool and Chelsea.

The fact that the Munich squad value remains so high despite the disappointing sporting season is due in part to the upgrades that Jamal Musiala, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Mathys Tel received in 2023/24. Pavlovic increased his starting market value from 200,000 euros to 30 million euros – in the most recent update it climbed by 5 million euros. Tel doubled his value over the course of the season to 40 million euros, even reaching 50 million in the winter, and Musiala has now increased by 10 million to 120 million euros. This makes him the most valuable player to have been under contract with Bayern since the introduction of TM market values in 2004.

In addition to the upgrades of these three talents, the signings of Sacha Boey (new market value: €18 million), Bryan Zaragoza (€12 million) and Eric Dier (€12 million) were also necessary in the winter transfer window to keep the squad value at a similar level to the start of the season. The trio currently has a market value of €42 million – only Boey, who came from Galatasaray for a transfer fee of €30 million, saw a loss of €4 million this time. By far not the biggest devaluation in the squad of the third-placed Bundesliga team.

This went to Kingsley Coman, who has been plagued by injuries again this season, has only been involved in eight goals in 27 games and whose market value has fallen from 65 million to 50 million euros. Market value administrator Julius Weißenstein says: “The 27-year-old Frenchman had a disappointing season. In total, he missed over 20 games due to injury and therefore played a subordinate role.” The last time Coman had such a modest haul in terms of scoring points was in 2016/17.

Meanwhile, there were devaluations of 10 million euros for Alphonso Davies (50 million), Min-jae Kim (45 million), Joshua Kimmich (50 million) and Harry Kane (100 million). While Kane’s market value is declining due to his age despite top performances, the Bayern trio were unable to confirm their market value on the pitch – for all three, this is the second devaluation in a row. Kimmich had to swap his preferred position as a “six” at Bayern and in the DFB team for the right side of defense and was not in form for a long time.

The latter also applies to Davies, whose months-long contract poker shows no sign of ending, and to Kim. The South Korean came from Napoli for 50 million euros and was a regular in Thomas Tuchel’s central defense in the first half of the season. After the Asian Cup, he rotated between the starting eleven, joker and reserve roles and made two serious mistakes in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid (2:2).

In his first summer as Bayern’s sporting director, Max Eberl has the chance to steer the squad’s value back towards the billion-euro mark with direct hits on the transfer market. The Munich team was still scratching at this mark in February 2024 and in the first half of 2023. Eberl will install Vincent Kompany as Tuchel’s successor, who will be working as a coach with a team of this size for the first time. As a player, he played for Manchester City from 2008 to 2019, currently the most valuable squad in the world with a value of 1.27 billion euros.
