FIFA is considering authorizing championship matches abroad

Will we soon see a Real Madrid-Barcelona Clasico in Miami or a Manchester City-Liverpool in the Middle East? FIFA is in any case considering authorizing national leagues to organize Championship matches abroad. The governing body of world football decided on Wednesday to create a working group of 10 to 15 members responsible for examining the idea and making recommendations in the coming months on this subject.

The biggest European clubs regularly play lucrative friendly matches around the world, such as Tottenham-Newcastle United which will take place next Wednesday in Melbourne (Australia), just three days after the end of the Premier League season.

Competitions like the Spanish Super Cup, organized in recent years in Saudi Arabia, or the French Champions Trophy, now played almost every year abroad, have already taken the plunge. But the championships still remained under the control of FIFA regulations which prohibited their taking place outside the borders.

Last month, a legal challenge in the United States prompted FIFA to reconsider its long-standing opposition. La Liga has already declared that it wants to play matches in North America from 2025. This decision to reconsider the situation was taken as the annual FIFA Congress takes place on Friday in Bangkok with the choice of the organization of the 2027 Women’s World Cup between Brazil and a Germany-Belgium-Netherlands ticket.
