Three European opponents await the selection of national coach Alfred Gislason in Herning, Denmark. To advance, the German handball players must finish at least third.

The German men’s national team will face the Czech Republic, Poland and Switzerland in the preliminary round of next year’s Handball World Championship. This was the result of the draw in the Croatian capital Zagreb. The tournament will be played from January 14 to February 2, 2025 in Denmark, Norway and Croatia.

“This is an interesting, fairly balanced and even close group,” said national coach Alfred Gislason: “We know Switzerland very well. Overall, however, we will only be concerned with the World Cup from the autumn onwards – now the focus is clearly on the Olympic Games.”

The German team was seeded as the leader of Group A and will play its matches in Herning, Denmark. To qualify for the main round, the team led by captain Johannes Golla must finish at least third. Then they will play in the main round – also in Herning – against the three best teams in Group B. The hosts and defending champions Denmark, Italy, Algeria and Tunisia will play there.

The top two teams in the main round advance to the quarter-finals. The knockout and medal games will be played in Baerum, just outside the Norwegian capital Oslo.
