Hannover 96 has ended Karlsruher SC’s winning streak. After seven games without defeat, the KSC lost somewhat unfortunately with 1:2 (1:1) against Lower Saxony on Sunday (May 12th, 2024) and is still in fifth place in the 2nd football table with 52 points only because of the better goal difference, ahead of 96 -Bundesliga.

With their goals, Hannover’s Andreas Voglsammer (19th minute) and Marcel Halstenberg (65th) marred the home farewell of Karlsruhe’s ex-national player Lars Stindl and KSC captain Jerôme Gondorf, who are both ending their careers after the last matchday next weekend . Paul Nebel (44th) scored the 1-1 equalizer for the hosts with his header in the varied game.

“You saw two teams that both want to win, especially my team,” 96 coach Stefan Leitl told the Sportschau after the game. “We actually had to lead higher at half-time and then it was clear that the opponent was reacting. Then we had to suffer a bit again, but overall it was a good performance.”

“We didn’t play well in the first half,” said Karlsruhe coach Christian Eichner, who readjusted during the break and then saw a KSC “who I knew from the last few weeks.” In addition, “the luck of the match was not on our side today”.

Eichner said about Stindl: “The younger generation may not have even noticed what Lars has achieved in his career.” And further: “I am very grateful to have had such a player under my wing.”

Hanover with the better chances

The first half was evenly balanced, with Hannover having the better chances to score. When Voglsammer lost 0-1, KSC goalkeeper Max Weiß had no chance. The 19-year-old was in goal in place of regular goalkeeper Patrick Drewes, who the club still wants to give up. Nebel headed in from close range to make it 1-1.

After the break it continued back and forth. The hosts did more for the game, but 96 were more consistent on offense: ex-national player Halstenberg volleyed home a corner to give the guests victory. On the other hand, Marcel Beifus (71′) missed the equalizer for Karlsruhe when Nicolo Tresoldi cleared it off the line.
