ROMA – 33 years after Emanuela Pierantozzi’s victory in Barcellona ’91, Italian judo returns to celebrate a gold medal at the World Championships.
It does so thanks to the 29-year-old Roman Odette Giuffrida who, in Abu Dhabi, beat the Uzbek Diyora Keldiyorova in the final of the women’s -52 kg category.
In her career Giuffrida has also reached the podium in two editions of the Olympics, having won silver at Rio 2016 and bronze at Tokyo 2020.
For her, the one on May 19th is her first world title. The 22 year old Assunta Scutto, Neapolitan who grew up in the Star Judo Club Maddaloni in Scampia, she lost the final of the women’s 48 kg category of the World Championships in Abu Dhabi by ippon against the Mongolian Baasankhuu Bavuudorj. The Italian is therefore a silver medalist (ansa).
