Italian Tennis Star Jannik Sinner Advances to Second Round of French Open After Injury Comeback

Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner has advanced to the second round of the French Open in his first match after almost four weeks without losing a set.

The Australian Open winner, who was recently out due to a hip injury, beat the American Christopher Eubanks 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 on Court Suzanne Lenglen on Monday. In the second round, the world number two will face the French wildcard holder Richard Gasquet in Paris.

Despite the clear result, Sinner did not appear to be in top shape, as expected, especially when Eubanks got him going. But the 22-year-old Vienna winner was able to save himself in some tricky situations, especially with his strong serve.

Sinner said he was “no longer worried” about his hip before the match, but also admitted: “I’m definitely not in the physical shape I would like it to be. But we can’t perform miracles in less than ten days before the first-round match.”

Heavy rain affects tournament

In the women’s singles, Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, who already reached the final at Roland Garros in 2019, also mastered her first hurdle effortlessly. The Czech defeated the Spaniard Rebeka Masarova 6:1,6:3. The number 8 seeded Tunisian Ons Jabeur is also in the second round after a smooth 6:3,6:2 win over Sachia Vickery (USA).

Top favorite Iga Swiatek is also moving through at a rapid pace. The world number one from Poland beats the Frenchwoman Léolia Jeanjean 6:1, 6:2.

On the second day, rain also disrupted play at the second tennis major of the year, at least for the time being. After just under an hour and a half of play, play on the outdoor courts was stopped shortly after 12.30 p.m., and play could only continue on Court Philippe Chatrier and, this year, Court Suzanne Lenglen, thanks to flexible roofs.

Like Sebastian Ofner the day before, this affected an Austrian again. The first round match of qualifier Filip Misolic, who is celebrating his main draw debut at a major, was scheduled as the third match on Court 4 (LIVE Ticker>>>). After a rain break of around two hours, the match continued.

The big hit of the day between superstar Rafael Nadal and Alexander Zverev was certainly not in danger, as it took place on the biggest possible stage (NOW im LIVE-Ticker>>>).
