Since the beginning of the week, since his third round victory in Madrid, Jannik Sinner has been struggling with persistent hip problems. That’s why he ended the tournament in Spain early – actually to spare himself for Rome. Hardly anyone had any doubts about taking part in the Masters tournament at Foro Italico, which is viewed in tennis circles as the unofficial fifth Grand Slam. But now comes the bad news: Sinner cannot compete.
The Australian Open winner will travel to Rome, attend PR appointments there, show himself to the fans and watch one or two games, but you will not see him on the court. This also applies to the many tennis fans from South Tyrol who have secured tickets for the Internazionali d’Italia.
“It hurts to have to write these lines.” Jannik Sinner about his rejection
The world number two explained his cancellation on his social media channels on Saturday afternoon with the following words: “It hurts to have to write these lines. But after speaking to my doctors and specialists about my hip problems, I have to announce that unfortunately I will not be able to take part in the tournament in Rome.”
Next date: Roland Garros
This makes it clear: the Masters 1000 tournament in Rome is losing its biggest attraction. Jannik Sinner would have been the superstar at his home tournament that all of Italy was looking forward to. But the hip problems are apparently too severe for the man from Sexten to be able to take part in another tournament next week. His next big goal is the French Open, which will be held in Paris from May 20th.
