Legendary Stanislav Kafka: A Lifetime in Motorsport

Sixty-four-year-old Stanislav Kafka has been dedicated to motorsport all his life. At the age of fifteen, he experienced the atmosphere of car racing as an escort, at nineteen he had a racing license. During his career, he tested about twenty-five different rally cars, including several in the WRC category. He was also a motoring functionary or organizer of Rallye Bohemia.

On Saturday, fans and friends from motorsport could meet him at the autodrome in Sosnová near Česká Lípa. Kafka was here in the role of co-organizer of the unique Sosnová Classic event. It brings together people like himself – lovers of sports specials and historic cars.

In addition, Kafka decorated the meeting with a unique piece, he brought here one of the three produced prototypes of the racing special Škoda 200 RS. “I bought it fifteen or twenty years ago from Mr. Kahuda. He was also a racer and he acquired it in the early 80s directly from Škoda in Mladá Boleslav, where the car was parked after his racing career ended,” Stanislav Kafka described to Novinkám.

The Škoda sports special, which had its racing premiere in 1974, captivated Kafka as a boy. “I saw it at the races then, and when the opportunity to buy the car came up later, there was no hesitation. You can have a better Škoda, but from a historical point of view, the 200 is the most amazing for me. It’s just a 200,” described the satisfied owner of the historic sports special.

His car, together with another prototype brought to Sosnová to be shown by the Škoda Museum, was among the most popular on Saturday. Part of the Sosnová Classic was the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the racing premiere of the Škoda 180 RS and Škoda 200 RS specials.

World champion in rally and rallycross Petter Solberg also showed off behind the wheel of the 200 in Sosnová on Saturday. The Norwegian hero triumphed in the World Rally Series in 2003, making history as the last winner before the Sebastien Loeb era.

However, on Saturday in Sosnová, the fans could also chat with those who actually drove the jubilant Škoda special at the races, for example the legend of the Mladá Boleslav factory team, Oldřich Horsák. “We always finished on the podium with the 200,” said Horsák proudly about the jubilant car.

The Sosnová Classic took place at the popular autodrome for the first time last year and was already a great success. The event is a two-day event, which this year also included a Dakar section and an autograph session with Aleš Loprais, a meeting of Škoda 1000 MB cars or an exhibition of seven dozen historic motorcycles and 16 sidecars.
