The different teams that make up the local grassroots sport have returned home with numerous sporting successes in the different disciplines in which they have competed, on a day where practically all of them have competed outside of Baena.
On the one hand, last Saturday, May 11, Villanueva de Córdoba hosted the third provincial event in the under 11 and under 13 categories. Where the representatives of the Baena badminton club managed to get on the championship podiums on numerous occasions.
In the under-11 category, María Mérida and Pablo Lope were third in doubles. Pablo López third in individual under 11, like María Mérida.
Mario Castillo and Juanjo Lastres won gold in men’s doubles in the under-13 category. These young volantistas also placed Juanjo first in individual and Mario Castillo third.
Many of the club players participating in this provincial day were making their debut in the competition, where nerves and certain insecurities did not allow them to achieve greater success in the case of Jorge, Leo, Myroslava and Mari Cruz in sub 11 and Alex in sub 13.
Chess
Great tournament held by the Ruy López de Baena Club at the Provincial Chess Camp held in Nueva Carteya. Where the children’s team formed by Myroslava Rybachek, David and Iván Gámiz and Cayetana Martínez, with an average age of 10 years, achieved a more than creditable third place.
In the absolute tournament, the Baenenses club attended with two teams, with team “A” classified in fourth position, formed by Sebas Piernagorda, Giorgi Galych, Pablo Bazuelo and Lorenzo Ruiz. Ruy Lopez Iponuba had to settle for tenth place.
Cycling
Bronze medal for Carlos Tienda in the Andalusian BTT Half Marathon Championship 2024 that took place in the Granada town of Zafarraya. A very tough test of almost 48 km with a 1300 m gradient, where Carlos has been at the head of the race throughout the test, fighting until the final sprint with the second place finisher.
Petanque
The last day of the Cordoban First Division League, which in its fourth day and last day of petanque, has served for the Baenense Petanca Club to confirm itself as first classified in the competition and allow it access to the play offs. On this last day, which took place in the town of La Guijarrosa, the Baenense triplets beat their rivals quite easily, which has led them to direct qualification for the play offs, which will be played by the first two in group “A” and the first two of “A”, on dates yet to be determined by the Cordoba Delegation.
101 km of Ronda
This weekend was “the legendary 101 km 24 h race in Ronda (Málaga)” in its XXIV edition, a test characterized by the fact that the organization is carried out by the military corps of the Legion.
On this occasion the Media Legua Club attended this extreme test with Maria Triguero who did a spectacular 101km race in 10 hours and 57 minutes, finishing fourth overall and third in her category.
The provincial champion Vicente Mengibar also had a brilliant race, despite being injured at km 60, he managed to finish it in 11 hours and 14 minutes, a great career for this unconditional fighter.
Also mention the effort to finish the test by Javi Barba who managed to complete it in 16 hours and 37 minutes, as well as Javi Guerrero who crossed the finish line in 18 hours and 11 minutes. On the negative side, Rafa Vizcaíno had to abandon the test, due to health problems, at km 24.
The three members of the Landbike club, Daniel Pérez, Juan Antonio Padilla and José Rafael Ocaña, managed to finish the tough test. Obtaining the best position, 56th in the elite category, two other runners managed to be Finishers on a particularly hard day.
Swimming
The Baena Swimming Club won a good number of medals in the Holy Kingdom Tournament that took place at the Las Fuentezuelas Sports Complex facilities in Jaén. A total of 10 awards were given to the swimmers of the Baenense club. Highlight the excellent participation of Isabel Ortiz and Alejandra Santano who won 6 medals, two of them gold. While among the boys Álvaro Luque, Francisco Javier Santano and Martín del Valle with six decorations.

Handball
The Iponuba Handball children’s and junior players competed in the final four last Saturday in Lucena. The children’s team achieved third place, and the fry an excellent fourth position. After losing the first game on penalties and the second with Lucena.
