London Mayor Sadiq Khan Pushing for NFL Super Bowl in the Capital

The NFL has an expansion plan to bring the passion of American football to the rest of the world and although it is just taking the step of taking regular season games outside the border of the United States, there are nations that are already thinking about a Super Bowl.

London wants to host an NFL Super Bowl

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said Thursday that he is working to bring the NFL Super Bowl to his city to enhance its status as the world’s sports capital.

“The Super Bowl is really important to us. “We have several American football games and I want them to be played here because we want American sports fans in Europe to come to London to watch them and not just go to the United States,” Sadiq Khan told The New York Times.

NFL international games in London for 2024

In the 2024 NFL season, London will host three of the five regular-season games scheduled for this year outside the United States.

The first, corresponding to week 5, will take place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium between the New York Jets and the Minnesota Vikings, on October 6; A week later, in week 6, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Chicago Bears will collide, in the same venue.

The third duel, in week 7 of the campaign, will be played on October 20 between the Jaguars and the New England Patriots at Wembley Stadium.

London wants to be the sports center of the world

Since last April 25, before being re-elected as mayor, Sadiq Khan stressed that one of his objectives was to bring some of the main sporting events of the American leagues to London.

“If I am re-elected we will go even further. “We will try to bring the Super Bowl, WrestleMania and NBA games to London, in addition to preparing another bid for the 2040 Olympic Games,” he announced a month ago.

The NFL has held regular season games in London since 2007, when the New York Giants beat the Miami Dolphins 13-10 at Wembley Stadium.

Since then, the league has held matches year after year at that venue or at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the exception of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Germany will also have an NFL game in 2024

In Europe, besides England, only Germany has hosted regular season NFL games. The first was in 2022, when Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Seattle Seahawks 21-16.

In 2023 Frankfurt received two games and in 2024 the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers will meet on November 10 at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

On February 9, the NFL announced that as part of its international expansion for the 2025 season, the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid will host the first regular season game in Spain.
