Indicted by the Football Association (FA) this Thursday (23), Lucas Paquetá is accused of misconduct related to sports betting.

According to the investigation by members of the FA, which lasted around nine months, the midfielder West Ham is suspected of forcing the receipt of cards on four different occasions in Premier Leaguein order to encourage betting.

With the accusation, the FA informed that Paquetá has until June 3rd to provide his defense. The player was even considered as a new reinforcement for the Manchester Citybut may suffer harsh punishment if their involvement is proven.

What could be the punishment for Lucas Paquetá?

Based on similar cases, such as that of players Ivan Toney (Brentford) and Kynan Isaac (Stratford Town, Seventh Division), Paquetá can be temporarily banned from footballwith suspension of months or years.

In the case of the Brentford striker, his punishment was set for eight months. Kynan Isaac, accused of forcing a yellow card to encourage a bet with friends, was banned from football for 10 years.

Will Paquetá play in the Copa América 2024?

Still based on the cases of Ivan Toney and Kynan Isaac, it is likely that a possible punishment for Paquetá will only be announced in a few months.

With the predictions, for now the player has not left the squad list for the Copa América 2024. The CBF is still discussing the matter.

If he is punished, can Paquetá play in Brazil?

In theory, the punishment applied by the FA only applies to the English leagues. However, the association must communicate to FIFA and thus make the decision global.

Cases of Brazilian players involved in match-fixing schemes were declared global by FIFA. Striker Alef Manga, from Pafos (Cyprus), is an example: he was suspended for a year by the STJD.
