Major League Baseball and Nike Address Jersey Mishaps: Redesigns Planned for Fans and Players

Fans and players are finally being heard: Major League Baseball, together with the official supplier Nike, apparently wants to do something about the numerous jersey mishaps that have led to strong public criticism for months.

This is said to emerge from a memo from the MLB Players Association, the union of MLB players, which was distributed to baseball professionals and is available to the American sports portal The Athletic, among others.

Nike changed the MLB’s standard jerseys and pants before the season, sparking a wave of outrage. Fans criticized that the lettering on the back of the jerseys was far too small, that sweat stains appeared too quickly and that the pants were too transparent. The players also expressed dissatisfaction – because of the fit of the pants, the cheap feel of the fabric and the cracks that appeared.

MLB jerseys are set to be redesigned

The memo states that after weeks of discussions with the league and the official supplier, the union has “received indications” that some changes will be made, including a return to the larger lettering, the earlier cuts and the higher quality zipper existed until 2023. There should also be corrections to the pants to fix the transparency issue.

These changes will apparently be made by the start of the 2025 season at the latest.

“This was purely a Nike problem,” the memo to players said, according to The Athletic. Here, too, the criticism is: “Essentially, Nike has innovated something that did not need any innovation.”

Nike had previously told the American media that the company had collected feedback from players and was working on solving the sweat problem or the perceived different shades of gray in the top and pants.

Nike is already working on solving the problems

The memo, in turn, does not represent an official confirmation from Nike. It is information from the union about what progress is being made in the case of the jersey fiasco. Nike initially did not want to comment on the issue, the report says.

Since 2019, Nike has been the official jersey supplier of the MLB. At that time, the two sides had agreed on a ten-year, $1 billion contract for the North American Baseball League.
