Mathieu van der Poel Prepares for Tour de France with Altitude Training in French Alps and Chalet Stay

After his impressive spring, Mathieu van der Poel traditionally disappears from the radar for a few months.

The world champion first enjoyed a well-deserved holiday with his girlfriend Roxanne Bertels. He has now resumed training and will soon go on an altitude training course in the French Alps. Van der Poel wants to shine in the Tour this summer.

Like every year, Van der Poel will prepare for La Grande Boucle together with his teammates in La Plagne. By the way, it is the only time he will do an altitude training camp this year. The classification men, but also many of his competitors (for example Wout van Aert), train at altitude several times a year.

“One altitude internship per year is more than enough for me,” says Van der Poel in Bahamontes. “I am not like Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard, who often train at altitude for a long time.”

Chalet

To make things more bearable, Van der Poel & co are not staying in a hotel, but in a chalet. He would prefer to do an altitude internship in Livigno. “There I can still train alternately with the mountain bike. Because three weeks every day with the road bike on the same roads in the mountains… you don’t have an endless choice of routes. That’s disappointing.”
