Medvedev Battles Through, Sinner Shines, and Tsitsipas Cruises: Roland-Garros First Round Recap

Medvedev manhandled but qualified

At least Daniil Medvedev got back into his tournament. Seeded No. 5 this year at Roland-Garros, the Russian had to fight a fierce fight lasting more than 3 hours to defeat the German Dominik Koepfer in 4 rounds (6-3, 6-4, 5-7 , 6-3). The German let go prematurely in the first two sets, but he punished Medvedev’s slight drop in concentration to restart the game at the end of the third set, taking advantage of his hitting weighed down by the weather conditions.

Immediately put on alert, Medvedev regained control in the 4th set to avoid embarking on a marathon which did not bode well, facing the player who had exhausted Roger Federer in 2021. Broken, then unbroken, Gilles’ protégé Simon stacked 3 impeccable games to pin Koepfer in the final set, going from 3-3 to 6-3 almost in the blink of an eye. He will face Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round.

Sinner dry and quiet

A year ago, Jannik Sinner should have waited to conclude this first round match. Like Sunday, the rain came this Monday at Roland-Garros but protected by the new roof of the Suzanne-Lenglen court, the Italian was able to stay dry and concentrated to dismiss Christopher Eubanks in three sets (6-3, 6-3, 6-4). A duel against Richard Gasquet awaits him in the 2nd round.

It took a little over two hours for a Sinner on a piano rhythm to begin. In mastery, the number 2 seed did not strain his talent and did what was necessary in each round to make the difference. Even his only break conceded was in a first set that he already had in hand. Facing Gasquet in the 2nd round, Sinner will still be able to calibrate himself.

Discreet entry for Tsitsipas

Behind Sinner, Stefanos Tsitsipas successfully entered the first round of Roland-Garros for which he cited Alejandro Davidovich Fokina as the number one favorite. Facing Marton Fucsovics, a regular in the second round at Porte d’Auteuil, the Greek neither faltered nor suffered to qualify in three sets (7-6, 6-4, 6-1).

A little jostled in the first set, completed in the tie-break, but also in the second, Tsitsipas never had a break behind and his stroll in the third set showed that he had it under his belt. In the 2nd round, it will be Daniel Altmaier for the outsider who advances masked.
