The German women’s national volleyball team has begun the second part of its Olympic mission with another defeat.

In the continuation of the Nations League (VNL) in Arlington/US state of Texas, the team of national coach Alexander Waibl lost to the European champions from Turkey 1:3 (25:20, 20:25, 9:25, 24:26) after a good start. The DVV women had finished the first VNL block in Antalya, Turkey, with just one win and three losses, which put a damper on their hopes of a ticket to Paris.

Tenth place must be the goal

At the end of the group stage (June 16), Germany must be among the top ten teams in the world rankings to secure one of the last five tickets for the Summer Olympics in Paris (July 26 to August 11). Before the international block, Germany was 12th, and its chances have not improved.

Now against Canada

Unlike the men, the German women’s players missed their first opportunity to qualify for the Olympics in a qualifying tournament. Waibl, who is also coach of the Bundesliga team Dresdner SC (since 2009), was appointed national coach until August following the unexpected resignation of Belgian Vital Heynen. The DVV selection will play its next game on Thursday (11 p.m. CEST) against Canada.
