The fans at Zolldamm in Salzgitter couldn’t believe their eyes. 30 minutes before kick-off of the regional league match (6th division) between FC Germania Bleckenstedt and second-placed 1. SC Göttingen 05, NBA star Dennis Schröder (30/Brooklyn Nets) made a surprise appearance!
The basketball world champion drove up in a Rolls Royce, marched into the clubhouse with a backpack and toiletry bag and changed in the bar area. Shortly afterwards he was wearing the number 17 on his back – and was even in the starting eleven! “I want to keep myself a bit fit,” Schröder told the “Braunschweiger Zeitung”.

Coach Gökhan Arikoglu gave the superstar a short tactical briefing. Then it started. Schröder: “I’m supposed to cause a bit of unrest up front on the left.”
He did that until the 62nd minute. Then the MVP of the World Cup final was substituted. Schröder stayed out of duels because of the risk of injury, but ran away from his opponent on one or two occasions. Nevertheless, Bleckenstedt lost the catch-up game 1:5.

The fact that Schröder played with the amateurs is thanks to his brother-in-law.
Midfielder Daniel Ziolo (27), the brother of his wife Ellen, plays for Bleckenstedt. Schröder, who lives with his family in his hometown of Braunschweig in the summer, has therefore often been a guest as a spectator. Now he has fulfilled a big wish: “I always wanted to play with my brother-in-law.”

Bleckenstedt had been preparing the secret coup for a long time. Schröder needed a player’s pass to play in an official match.
Arikoglu in the Braunschweiger Zeitung: “Dennis wanted to play on the big field and not just on the football pitch. When I told him that we were playing against the second-placed team in the table, even the world star was a little nervous.”
From now on, it’s all about basketball again for the captain of the national team and majority shareholder of BBL club Löwen Braunschweig. The hot phase of Olympic preparations begins on July 6 in Cologne with an international match against France.
