Pokémon Go Updates: Are Niantic’s Changes Breaking the Game?

With every Pokémon Go update, there always seems to be a chance that the game will break. This is now so normal that the community accepts the errors calmly when Niantic releases a major AR and Snapshot update.

As the final part of Pokémon Go’s controversial “Rediscover” update series, Niantic has updated the AR features and improved the snapshot function. With the Pokémon Go “Rediscover Your Reality” update, you can now take a snapshot with up to three Pokémon, including positioning them, changing their poses, and adding extra flair. Unfortunately, not everything works as expected.

New feature not available on iPhone – is anyone still testing?

After the update was released and promoted by Niantic, Niantic’s games support page noted that Pokémon Go’s AR mode was not working properly on all iPhone Pro and Pro Max models, causing Pokémon to experience “strange Positions” appeared. This issue is related to “disabled reality blending” and will be fixed in the next release. But it’s another example of something changing in Go before it immediately breaks again. This is surprising since iPhones generally account for a large market share and we wonder if anyone still tests their updates before they are released?

This year alone, we’ve seen Pikachu appear during a Sandshrew Spotlight hour, raid tag issues, battle notifications not appearing during Go Battle League matches, exclusive items being accidentally made available, how Quick attack damage has been reduced and as Niantic mentioned even more openly. Going back even further, there was even an incident in December where Niantic accidentally released Kyurem Black and Kyurem White as GBL rewards and removed them from the game – and we still haven’t seen them officially released.

Niantic and Pokémon Go have serious problems

These are just some of the problems that Niantic has publicly acknowledged. Recently, there was an issue with Poké Ball throwing distance where some players were able to throw their Poké Balls beyond the full throw distance or not at all, which impacted the game. Niantic has only mentioned the issue in replies on prevented the game from playing normally for a long time – although it may have been fixed in the last update.

After recent events like the disastrous Avatar update that rocked the community, we’ve gotten a sneak peek into Niantic’s beta testing. Some features, such as the new customization options, will only be tested for a few months before going live. And if the “unpolished” avatar changes and comments from an internal tester are anything to go by, even limited testing won’t stop Niantic from releasing a product – regardless of early negative feedback or possible bugs.

Pokémon Go community frustrated

“Weeks of testing – months even – and yet features like this and the avatars continue to be released buggy and ugly,” said Pokémon Go journalist JRESeawolf. “You don’t even listen to your own testers and developers, @NianticLabs. Pull yourself together, please?”

Niantic has not responded to Dot Esports’ request for comment on the recent updates and community reaction. The company also hasn’t publicly commented on the Avatar controversy or other major complaints, despite firing the studio responsible for the changes.
