STVV and OH Leuven were not able to spoil the supporters in a match in which there was not much at stake. The great goals of Fatih Kaya and Jon Thorsteinsson and the farewell of Japanese icon Shinji Okazaki were rare highlights.

STVV – OHL in a nutshell

  • Man of the match

Should we make this Shinji Okazaki? The Japanese warrior, known for his incredible win with Leicester and fifty goals for the national team, will soon hang up his boots. With the exception of one action, he didn’t really impress today, but after such a career you deserve a shout-out.

  • Key moment

After a great goal from Kaya, OH Leuven was forced to look for something. With fresh power Thorsteinsson this also worked, but the final score was immediately recorded less than half an hour from the end.

  • Remarkable

Matte Smets almost had an individually perfect season. Start and finish every match, without yellow cards. Referee Arthur Denil decided differently and gave the young defender a yellow card in the 87th minute. A shame, because no rooster would have crowed if the mistake went unpunished.

  • Anyone looking for good, interesting football should not be in the Conference League Play-offs this period. Or not at STVV-OH Leuven, who only play for honor. The first half at Stayen was, apart from a chance from Ito, nothing to watch. Skip.

After the break things improved, at least a little. Especially after the guard of honor for the retiring Shinji Okazaki. It was also nice that OH Leuven took part in the tribute to the striker.

It was his replacement who made the nets shake. Kaya, the cult figure in Truiense because of his few goals, scored his second in the play-offs. Accept it and ram it in via the post in the turn, just like the real strikers do. Shinji watched, laughing.

Not for long, because Leuven hung the signs just ten minutes later. After a nice play from Russo and a wonderful ball from Maziz, Thorsteinsson was allowed to approach Suzuki alone. That gave the Icelander time to cut out Matte Smets once or twice and then put the final score on the board.

One point doesn’t gain anyone anything, even though there was little to lose beforehand. The countdown to the 2024-25 season has already begun for these teams.

Oscar Garcia (OH Leuven): “This is a deserved point, against a strong opponent against whom we also had good moments. A draw is logical after this match, we play almost for nothing and still remain concentrated. Here at home, STVV has lost few points , and so we can be satisfied with this point.”

Thorsten Fink (STVV): “There weren’t many chances, and on certain statistics the draw was correct. But we wanted to do more, create more. We brought in more attackers in the second half, but in the end we didn’t manage to win. OHL made it very difficult for us, they analyzed us well.”

    Phase by phase

    End

End of this season on Stayen! The second half had a little more to it than the first, Kaya scored his second of the season. Thorsteinsson hung the signs evenly with deft work. An extra point for both teams.

One last attack, STVV thinks, but then loses the ball too easily. Bertaccini intervenes centrally and mows Florian Miguel to the ground.

STVV is now also insisting. Koita can almost finish on Bocat’s instructions, from very close. In front of the goal, some teammates throw themselves at the ball, but no yellow one can get to it.

An extra 5 minutes will be added.

Thorsteinsson not with his second! First he ran ten meters offside, but in the next phase there is a good ball from Maziz. Jon Dagur can put his head to it, but framing is not possible.

Denil ends Matte Smets’ impressive series. With one match (and a few minutes left) he had 0 (zero) yellow cards this season. Smets did take down Banzuzi, but it was watery yellow, too.

STVV does not get a shot

Suddenly there is Bertaccini in the Leuven sixteen, but he and Kaya get in each other’s way. Leuven can be relieved.

Nsingi turns on his afterburners on the left. The young striker quickly runs across half the field and then almost plays into Thorsteinsson. Just not for the Icelander, who can still pick up after poor defending from the home team, but cannot do too much with that either.

Leuven also makes it through. Thorsteinsson and Mendyl combine until they are sixteen, but the Moroccan no longer finds a boyfriend to match.

STVV finds another gap on the right. Bertaccini passes the ball low to Kaya, but Leysen is paying close attention to the Turk’s shot.

    Apply the brakes

The game comes to a standstill again, with OH Leuven dropping back again. Too bad, because once the people of Leuven start playing, it is a pleasant spectacle.

Leuven has a taste for it! Goal scorer Thorsteinsson shifts the game via Banzuzi to Maziz, who also suddenly revives. The Frenchman kicks, but now finds a good Suzuki.

    Directly!

OH Leuven’s equalizer! Russo passes a Kanary nicely at the back and then puts Thorsteinsson alone on the way to a yielding Suzuki. The Icelander cuts out Matte Smets once or twice and then drives the ball into the net. Everything to be done again for STVV.

For the time being, the people of Leuven have not managed to really make anything of it. Koita wants to score his goal on a free kick, but first has to get a little closer. His tap after Ito’s pass is too hard, after which he makes a mistake.
